RESUMO

Impostor phenomenon has gained increasing attention within the health care and health professions education literature. Although consistently depicted as a debilitating socioemotional experience, studies also suggest a strategic aspect to impostor phenomenon - denoting a conceptual ambiguity to impostor phenomenon that has yet to fully examined. Within this paper, we use humility as a conceptual sparring partner with impostor phenomenon to examine the similarities and differences between the concepts, as well as explore the various nuances associated with impostor phenomenon. By comparing and contrasting impostor phenomenon and humility from interdisciplinary perspectives and within the context of health professions specifically, we not only further refine their meaning and usage within the literature, but also spotlight key areas for future research.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease affects 55 million people worldwide. As the disease progresses, these individuals require a devoted caregiver, often a family member, who provides evolving complex care. Caregivers can experience a variety of ongoing stressors, resulting in reductions in caregiver emotional well-being (and other quality-of-life indicators). Information and communication technologies provide an excellent opportunity to train caregivers remotely and help them to manage these stressors and related distress. OBJECTIVE: This protocol describes the theoretical rationale, study design, and methods of a new, technologically enhanced psychoeducational skill-building intervention for caregivers of people with dementia that includes a virtual reality component. METHODS: Through Alzheimer's Eyes is a 4-week, single-arm, pre-post test pilot study consisting of 4 sessions of 90 minutes each that are delivered by videoconferencing. These sessions include a weekly virtual reality experience characterizing the journey of an older Latina with Alzheimer's disease from her perspective to help caregivers see through the eyes of a person with dementia. The 4 sessions cover the skill-training topics of communication, managing challenging behaviors and unhelpful thoughts, the importance of self-care, and mindfulness-all of which are key components designed to reduce stress and distress in family caregivers. Individual interviews conducted before and after the intervention gather participant insights into the intervention, evaluate its feasibility and acceptability, and assess its impact on key outcomes. RESULTS: Data collection for the study started in January 2022, and the results are expected to be submitted for publication in the second half of 2023. Twenty caregivers from the United States have completed the workshop to date. Preliminary data gathered from these participants support the intervention's feasibility and acceptability. CONCLUSIONS: Through Alzheimer's Eyes leverages existing technology combined with psychoeducational skill building to help caregivers manage their stress, regardless of their location. RESUMO

Maintaining brain health and promoting healthy lifestyle strategies to manage modifiable risk factors is vital to ensuring well-being for all - not only for the individuals with memory challenges but also their family caregivers and professional providers. In this brief review paper, we highlight modifiable risk and protective factors and opportunities for dementia risk reduction (e.g., limited alcohol use and reduced exposure to air pollution, secondhand smoke, and excessive noise); provide an overview of the World-Wide FINGERS Network and its goal to adapt the original Finnish Geriatric Intervention Study to Prevent Cognitive Impairment and Disability (FINGER) multidomain lifestyle approach in various settings to determine whether the protocol is effective across different populations in varied geographic, cultural, and economic settings and to optimize the model across a continuum of cognitive decline; and, comment on challenges and opportunities for researchers and clinicians including opportunities for risk reduction and intervention in primary care settings and the need to establish linkages across multiple levels of intervention to sustain behavior change in prevention, treatment, and care.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: New nurses often struggle with recognizing cues and applying clinical judgment. Nurse educators develop educational simulation scenarios to support students in developing clinical judgment, which includes the foundational step of recognizing cues. PURPOSE: A scoping review on undergraduate nursing students' cue recognition during simulation was conducted to systematically map the existing research and identify knowledge gaps. METHODS: From initial identification of 228 studies published between 2010 and 2020, a total of 17 quantitative or qualitative studies were independently appraised using the Joanna Briggs Institute scoping review process and PRISMA-ScR reporting guidelines. RESULTS: Cues were missed with varying levels of frequency. Participants frequently failed to recognize respiratory rates and physical assessment changes as salient cues to patient deterioration. Verbal cues from simulated patients were often missed or resulted in distancing behaviors. CONCLUSION: Research is needed to determine the most effective methods for helping learners develop skills in cue recognition and analysis.

RESUMO

Impostor phenomenon was first described by Clance and Imes in 1978 as the disbelief of own person's capacities and skills in overachieving women. Since then, studies have focused on causes and characteristics of such self-perception. This negative thought impedes professionals to achieve full potential of their abilities, triggering a series of unpleasant reactions like anxiety or poor patient outcome. This concept analysis aims to provide better understanding of the impostor phenomenon and its impact on the nursing profession. Further it may raise awareness to help promote interventions oriented toward overcoming feelings of fraudulence that help in achieving the full potential of individuals' skills.

RESUMO

Digitalization provides access to an integrated network of unexploited big data with potential benefits for society and the environment. The development of smart systems connected to the internet of things can generate unique opportunities to strategically address challenges associated with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to ensure an equitable, environmentally sustainable, and healthy society. This perspective describes the opportunities that digitalization can provide towards building the sustainable society of the future. Smart technologies are envisioned as game-changing tools, whereby their integration will benefit the three essential elements of the food-water-energy nexus: (i) sustainable food production; (ii) access to clean and safe potable water; and (iii) green energy generation and usage. It then discusses the benefits of digitalization to catalyze the transition towards sustainable manufacturing practices and enhance citizens' health wellbeing by providing digital access to care, particularly for the underserved communities. Finally, the perspective englobes digitalization benefits by providing a holistic view on how it can contribute to address the serious challenges of endangered planet biodiversity and climate change.

RESUMO

The scope of this study was to identify which activities or interventions cause changes in the quality of life of the elderly. It involved a systematic review of the literature in the Scopus, ISI Web of Science, Scielo, Lilacs, BDenf and PubMed databases. The key word for the Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) used was "quality of life," in combination with the terms of greatest interest: "elderly, motor activity, education." The research was conducted between July and August 2015 and included original works published between 2010 and 2015 in English, Portuguese and Spanish. The Cochrane strategy was also adopted for the preparation of the review. Twenty-seven articles were studied that compared the quality of life of the elderly before and after performing a physical, educational or mixed-type intervention. The main result obtained was that the general health, social function, physical role and satisfaction with life are the most influenced domains, whereby group physical activities are practiced the most. The conclusion drawn is that when carrying out activities of any kind, preferably adapted for age, there are changes in the quality of life of the elderly in a general manner, notably with an improvement in functional, mental and social aspects.
